Under the supervision of the Academic and Instructional Coordinator, the Inclusive Academic (& Special Education) Instructor will be responsible for designing, implementing, and developing high quality and interactive lessons to support learning gains and/or GED attainment. The instructor will work closely with OBT’s Academics Team to support in developing engaging, challenging, and impactful educational programming.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Develop interactive and intentional curriculum for participants across all program components and provide specialized instruction to address the academic goals of participants with IEPs.
  • Facilitate focus groups with participants with learning disabilities and IEP’s.
  • Assess each participant's level of progress on an ongoing basis and develop and implement appropriate learning goals and objectives.
  • Utilize evidence-based instructional practices and accommodations to differentiate instruction and facilitate learning for participants with a range of disabilities.
  • Implement various teaching techniques and methods of learning to enable participant success and achieve contractual milestones, outcomes.
  • Administer the TABE test and discuss assessment with each participant.
  • Consult other instructors and interdisciplinary team members in providing inclusive instruction.
  • Facilitate meaningful and interactive classes and foster safe and fun learning.
  • Track, monitor and input data on all funder and internally required participant and program milestones and outcomes.

  • Participate in internal training on Motivational Interviewing (MI) and employ MI strategies as a primary modality of practice.

  • Develop, collect, and track internal and funder mandated worksheets.
  • Work collaboratively with the Sunset Park Programs and Academics Team to ensure cohesive messaging and services to youth.

  • Attend training and monitor trends on optimizing participant learning.
  • Other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to develop and facilitate intentional academic content for participants in a wide range of academic levels.  
  • Ability to tailor curriculum for participants with IEPs
  • Ability to identify gaps in learning and suggest changes.
  • Ability to work as part of a team in order to develop and ensure positive outcomes for all participants.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and enter data in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Ability to demonstrate professionalism and cultural competency in forming relationships with participants from diverse backgrounds, community partners, and colleagues.
Education and Experience/Training:
  • Relevant coursework in Special Education required; license in Special Education preferred.
  • Bachelor’s Degree (Degree in Education preferred)
  • Minimum of 3 years teaching experience
  • Experience in curriculum development and design.
  • Non-profit experience
  • Experience in using Microsoft Office, Google Classroom
Salary Range: $50,000 - $55,000
